about the East Texas Genealogical Society
Uncovering East Texas Roots: The East Texas Genealogical Society
Since 1977, the East Texas Genealogical Society (ETGS) has been a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people discover their ancestors through educational programs. ETGS serves the Texas counties of Anderson, Gregg, Henderson, Panola, Rusk, and Smith.
Our Mission: A Threefold Commitment:
- Ignite the passion for family history: We provide high-quality programs, workshops, and resources to empower participants on their genealogical journey in finding their ancestors, regardless of their experience level.
- Preserve East Texas history for generations to come: We collect, archive, and publish genealogical and historical materials related to East Texas, ensuring this rich heritage is available for present and future generations.
- Stronger Roots, Stronger Kids: To empower children and youth to discover the joy and impact of family history through our engaging programs, the Junior Genealogist Program (ages 5-10) and the Family History Ambassador Program (ages 11-18). Studies have shown that by connecting with their roots, young people build a strong sense of identity, belonging, and resilience, fostering their overall well-being.
